Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

"Scholarship of Teaching and Learning is the academic engagement of university lecturers in the specialised sciences with their own teaching and/or the learning of students in the institutional environment through investigations and systematic reflections with the intention of making the findings and results known to the interested public and thus accessible for the exchange of experience and discussion." (Definition: Huber et.al. 2014, p.7)

Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, SoTL for short, has developed in the Anglo-American higher education system and has become established in the Anglo-American higher education context since the founding of the International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning (ISSOTL) in 2004 at the latest. There is also a movement in European educational research that is driving SoTL forward in various countries, similar to that of the teaching portfolio.

The publication of the results obtained is an important part of the procedure in order to make the findings accessible to other teachers and to the community - especially teachers of the same subject area. In particular, the visualisation extends "scholarly teaching" to the "Scholarship of Teaching and Learning".

The SoTL researcher has the opportunity to publish their teaching experiences and formalised findings and thus make them accessible to other teachers from comparable subject areas. In addition, the researcher deals intensively with disciplinary educational research, so that a deeper insight into and handling of this field of their own subject area is promoted. Last but not least, the teacher professionalises their own teaching, which demonstrably expands their scientific and academic experience.

The focus is on evaluating the innovative forms of teaching and learning used in your own course. Within SoTL, "teaching and learning" is understood as a broad field, i.e. innovative forms of teaching and learning as well as innovative testing, evaluation and feedback or the design of study modules and programmes may be considered.

Following the credo "shift from teaching to learning" (cf. Barr & Tagg, 1995), student learning and the acquisition of competences is at the centre of the contributions. Furthermore, SoTL creates the option for an exchange on the differences and peculiarities of teaching in the various subject areas and the basis for the development of higher education subject didactics.
