German-speaking SoTL network

Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) is becoming increasingly popular in the community of university teachers and university didactics experts in Germany.

Why is SoTL interesting for teachers, university didactics experts and other stakeholders in teaching and learning? What does SoTL mean? How can SoTL be implemented in practice?

Following the interest in and feedback on SoTL at the dghd conference in March 2017, a German SoTL network was founded to start working together and thus promote the implementation of SoTL at German universities and the specific attitude towards university teaching that is associated with it. We want to exchange information about current implementation variants as well as possible implementations and network on SoTL in order to further prepare the ground for SoTL in Germany.

To this end, we invite all colleagues in university teaching, university didactics and employees in related fields who are interested in SoTL in theory and practice, are working on it and/or have already gained experience.

What SoTL means to us is summarised in this impulse paper.

The current team of speakers consists of:

Prof. Dr Maik Arnold (FH Dresden)
Dr Alexa Brase (University of Hamburg)
Dr Nerea V?ing (Paderborn University)'
Dr des. Stefka Weber

The network meetings take place twice a year at different locations. Each meeting is hosted by one of the colleagues organised in the network.

The following network meetings have taken place so far:

1. meeting: 11/2017 in Paderborn
2. meeting: 05/2018 in Bielefeld

In recent years, universities in German-speaking countries have developed a variety of approaches to the subject-specific further development of their own teaching. The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) concept has great potential for further development and innovation through its research-based approach to teaching. As part of the first SoTL tour in the winter semester 2020/21, various lecturers from German-speaking countries had the opportunity to exchange ideas about SoTL with colleagues from other universities.
