Sustainability communication in focus. CoLab "Communicating Green Transitions"

The CoLab "Communicating Green Transitions" took place at Paderborn University (UPB) from 24 to 26 June 2025. International guests from the COLOURS university alliance, researchers, students and representatives from business and society came together over three days to discuss the communication of green transformation. Together, they developed solutions for current challenges in the field of sustainability communication and ecological transformation.

Opening with a panel of experts, specialist presentations and exchange of experiences

The CoLab began with a panel discussion that highlighted societal challenges and presented current approaches to science communication - how can complex scientific findings be communicated in an understandable way? How can we best deal with misinformation? And how can we counter scepticism in relation to social change? - International experts from the fields of science, communication and sustainability, especially in the field of green mobility, shared their knowledge and discussed it with the other participants. Good practice examples of science communication at UPB and from the sustainability and transfer area at the University of Le Mans were also presented in short specialist presentations.

From different perspectives that brought together theory and practice, the participants exchanged views on the challenges and opportunities of communicating green transformations.

In the subsequent workshops, five approaches to solutions for current challenges were developed, dealing with the communication of sustainability issues and the shaping of sustainability at universities and in regions. One focus here was on sustainable mobility and support programmes for teachers and educators.

The participants worked intensively to develop creative and innovative solutions for the challenges of sustainability communication and presented their results to the audience at the end of the CoLab.

Sharing ideas for the challenges of tomorrow

The CoLab format offers a platform for dialogue between science, business and society. It offers participants the opportunity to contribute their experience and knowledge of current issues as well as to contribute to possible solutions for social challenges by developing viable ideas themselves. Paderborn University organises two CoLabs per year as part of the European university alliance COLOURS, with further CoLabs being organised by the alliance partners. Through international exchange, universities and regions can jointly contribute to the development of social innovations.
