Specific Regulations for Civil Servants

For civil servants employed at Paderborn University, the Landesbeamtengesetz - LBG NRW regulates parental leave. Further information can be found on the website of the Landesamt für Besoldung und Versorgung NRW.

Leave of absence and part-time employment for family reasons for civil servants

Civil servants can also take another unpaid leave of absence for family reasons after their parental leave has ended. This can be a complete, temporary leave of absence, after which a return to the old job is usually possible. Alternatively, employees can agree to take leave for part of their original working hours, known as part-time leave/part-time employment. This is usually limited in time and allows the employee to return to the original position if required.

Civil servants must be granted leave without pay if they

  • a child under the age of 18 or
  • are actually looking after or caring for a relative in need of care according to a medical certificate.

This leave of absence requires the consent of the employer and civil servants are only entitled to leave of absence if there are no compelling official interests to the contrary. For civil servants, leave of absence is possible for up to twelve years.
