Writing peer tutor conference
Information on the Writing Peer Tutor Conference
The Student Writing Consultancy team regularly takes an active part in the Writing Peer Tutor Conference (SPTK). The conference is a platform that facilitates an international and interdisciplinary exchange on peer writing counselling for students at universities.
SPTK 2025
The 15th Writing Peer Tutor Conference - by students for students - took place from 30 September to 2 October 2025. Under the theme “Facing Change Together,” the conference was hosted by studierendenWERK BERLIN. Writing centers from universities across Germany and Austria came together for three days to exchange ideas on a variety of topics through lectures and workshops. The breaks over tea, coffee, snacks or lunch were used to continue networking, discuss the previous programme and think it through further.
With our own workshop, “Who Are My Peers? – Target Groups in Peer Writing Tutoring,” designed as a World Café, we aimed to contribute to the conference as well. The goal of the workshop was to collaboratively explore how we, as student peer tutors (SPT), can better reach and understand our target groups. At the same time, we wanted to reflect on what makes us unique as peer tutors - what skills and strengths we already possess and how we can become more visible to those we support. In four groups, participants worked on guiding questions related to four key themes and recorded their insights on flipcharts. The workshop concluded with a general discussion in which the results were presented, questions addressed, and the topic reviewed collectively.
The collegial case consultation offered the opportunity to discuss individual cases and explore how other SPTs might act in similar situations. At the end of the conference, a barcamp allowed participants to dive into topics that had not been covered in depth during the scheduled sessions or that sparked additional interest. This format of short yet intense discussions on various topics provided an inspiring conclusion to the event and highlighted how enriching such a gathering can be.
Although the conference made it clear that writing centers can function in very different ways, we are all still SPTs - a community striving for exchange, change, new opportunities, and connection. Together, we want to face change.
